In this issue:
If you're anxious about speaking, you can get over it. (Here's the link to my recent blog on that subject: http://gettingoveryourself.wordpress.com/2011/05/24/feeling-anxious-in-front-of-a-crowd.) I used to be anxious in front of a group. It was unnerving. I didn't like feeling out of control-not knowing if I said the right thing or really just not being sure what had just happened. I understand how it feels and I know it can be fixed. Having gotten past it, I'm pretty clear on the solution. It's really about caring more about helping the audience than worrying about what's going to happen to you. If you're nervous, you're probably thinking about yourself.
The audience doesn't care about you, they just want some information and they'd like you to not make them feel uncomfortable. When you think about yourself - wonder if you're doing a good job, worry about the outcome, worry about making a fool of yourself - you're not going to have a great presentation and you're likely to make them uncomfortable. Getting over yourself is the answer. It's good for you. It's good for the audience. A little practice every day will do the trick. Nicole C. Wood, Communications Coordinator, Belize Natural Energy Ltd.: “Thank you for all the instruction and insight you provided in our recent class. “I returned home with new skills and renewed energy, which is a good thing because my Manager sprung a presentation on me this morning (to 39 college students). “I didn't have time to prepare, but I did a quick impromptu mental organization of the information, and everyone seemed to enjoy the session. And, I felt good about it.” I'm tired of the people who just wait for the Q & A session to attack and push their point of view. Any ideas? If they're the same people every time, you might try talking to them ahead of time to let them know you're interested in their thinking on the subject. If they have a better nature, you might also try appealing to it in the interests of getting out of the meeting on time-or anything else you think might sway them. It's also helpful when you're organizing your thoughts to try to ward off the attacks by covering their material in your speech. If they're waiting for a chance to be heard, you can soften the impact and connect with them by describing their position in such a way that they can tell you've been paying attention to them. If you connect with them during your presentation, it should considerably soften their need to attack. “Many ideas grow better when transplanted into another mind, than in the one where they sprung up.” - Oliver Wendell Holmes “Few delights can equal the mere presence of one whom we trust utterly.” - George MacDonald “Chop your own wood, and it will warm you twice.” - Henry Ford “Failure is not the crime, low aim is.” - John Wooden Thousands of people have to give presentations every day, and
